Minecraft Xbox 360 Edition Reaches an Impressive 12 Million Sales, Total Game Sales Around 40m

We all know Minecraft has been incredibly successful as a PC venture, setting a new bar for what indie success means, but its later Xbox 360 edition has also been wildly successful.

Microsoft announced that their console's version of Minecraft has reached 12 million copies sold--an amazing achievement for any game. The fact that it's an indie title (and a port of one at that) makes this even more impressive, especially since millions of people already own the game on PC.

Alongside the milestone announcement, Microsoft also revealed a new mod pack-- the Candy Texture Pack--due out April 18, and updates will continue coming to Xbox 360. Developers Mojang, who made a huge profit from its games, are understandably excited and pleased with their massive sales numbers.

"I remember when we started talking about sales numbers that we would be super happy to sell 1M copies," Mojang's Daniel Kaplan said. "That would have put us on par with BF 1943 and Castle Crashers, which both are awesome games, so that was something to aim for. We never even dreamed of selling 12 million!"

Minecraft sales across all platforms are somewhere near 40m in total: 14.7m on PC, 12m on Xbox 360, more than 10m on mobile devices, and at last count roughly 1m on PlayStation 3.

The game has become absolutely massive, as you can see by the numbers, so hats off to the work creator Markus 'Notch' Persson has done with his indie project. More content and features are still being added, and the game has changed significantly since its popular beta.
