Xbox One May Be Able To Play Xbox 360 Games After All- Backwards Compatibility on the Way? [RUMOR]

Xbox One May Be Able To Play Xbox 360 Games After All

It's been a known and (begrudgingly) accepted fact that backwards compatibility is dead with the advent of the Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

But Sony has Playstation Now on the way, which will allow some PS3 games to be streamed on PS4, and it sounds like Microsoft might be considering an emulation system for 360 games on the One. Power Leveled has the report from the Microsoft Build developer conference:

"Microsoft's Build 2014 developer conference is on its final day today and had some interesting bit of information come up during the 'Understanding the Xbox One Game Platform Built on Windows' session. After the session finished, Frank Savage took some Q&A from the crowd and here was the very first question:

"Q. Are there any plans for an emulator for the 360 games?

"A. There are. But we aren't done thinking them through yet unfortunately. It turns out to be hard to emulate the PowerPC stuff on the x86 stuff. So there's nothing to announce, but I'd love to see it myself too."

So this doesn't necessarily mean that something's imminent, but he did say that "there are" plans in the works. Who knows how long that might end up taking.

Regardless, it's probably going to be a an Xbox Live exclusive kind of thing rather than a situation where you can play your old 360 discs, so don't hold your breath as far as that's concerned. Still, though, it is cool to know that there's a chance some 360 classics could make their way to the One.
