Super Smash Bros. For 3DS Gets Exclusive Multiplayer Game Mode 'Smash Run'

If you were thinking about just picking up Super Smash Bros. for Wii U this winter and leaving the 3DS version behind this summer, think again, because the 3DS has its own exclusive game mode that might be a game seller.

Super Smash Bros. Release Date Window Revealed

The mode, titled "Smash Run," was announced during today's Nintendo Direct and puts four players on a large map together with a bunch of minor enemies from various Nintendo franchises. Presented like a big platforming level, players run around the giant map to collect items over a five minute period.

At the end of the five minutes, all of the players are able to apply the power-ups that they got for their character and meet in battle against their three opponents. The battle then commences as a usual Smash, but the best scavengers are rewarded by being much more powerful than the competition, giving them a distinct advantage.

Overall, the mode sounds very interesting. It's something that we've never seen from Smash Bros. before, but it looks like it could be a blast to play with friends.

Smash creator Masahiro Sakurai revealed that he drew a lot of inspiration from a game mode in Kirby: Air Ride, which he also designed. He also recommended using the "random fighter" option in this mode because of the very different nature of this mode from any other.

Will this one mode be enough to get you to buy a 3DS version of the game this summer? Let us know in the comments.
