'The Evil Within' Gameplay Trailer Hits For PAX East- Shinji Mikami Brings Back the Horror [VIDEO]

Here's a New 'The Evil Within' Trailer to Scare You Silly

Bethesda has just released the latest trailer for The Evil Within, the upcoming horror game from Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami. This is the video that they will be showing off at PAX East this weekend and features more horror than will work on a busy convention floor. Hopefully they have a quiet place set up to throw some headphones on you and scare you silly...

The game concerns one Detective Sebastian Castellanos, a man who is investigating a brutal mass murder at an insane asylum when he and his partners get attached by some mysterious force. His fellow officers are brutally killed and he is knocked unconscious, only to wake up in a terrifying version of our world, full of nightmarish creatures that are out for his life. You'll play Castellanos as he tries to figure out what the hell is going on and how to return to his own world.

This definitely looks like a return to form for the famed director. There's plenty of disturbing imagery here in this trailer and familiar horror tropes abound- the crazed surgeon, the giant chained monster, the man strapped to the electric chair, and plenty more. There are even direct references to horror properties, like the hallways flowing with blood like The Shining, a guy with a safe on his head that's really reminiscent of Silent Hill 2's Pyramid Head (Safe Head vs. Pyramid Head fan art has to happen, people), and even a creature facing away from the camera just like the first zombie you encounter in Mikami's very own Resident Evil.

Check out the trailer below. The Evil Within will be released in North America on August 26, 2014, in Australia August 28, and throughout Europe on August 29, 2014 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC.
