Star Citizen Reaches $42 Million in Funding, Adds Several New Features

Star Citizen is racking up fan-funding unlike anything we've seen before, reaching the staggering $42 million plateau yesterday. Chris Roberts, founder of the game's developer Cloud Imperium, announced the news on the official blog and highlighted what the money will be adding to the game.

Every funding landmark reached unlocks new additions to the game with bonuses for backers. Roberts also lays out what the next goal (now $44 million) will unlock. The additions to the game for reaching $42 million include an updated observist guide, an explorer-class mobiGlas rig for people who backed the game before $42 million, a new "Gladius" fighter and most importantly of all, a towel.

The in-game towels are really just fun easter eggs, but it's good to see content continuing to be added for those who support the game. Of course, the developer benefits from this as well since it incentives people to spend, but I suppose everyone wins in the end.

There's only one new feature unlocked at $44 million, but it sounds like a larger one than the multiple smaller additions that were included in the last goal. Players will see a Hangar room system added if they reach the next landmark, something that was voted on by players in the past. Those who back the project will also get a number of items for their hangar, including 3D holographic cartography.

I'm not sure where all of this money is continuing to pour in from, but I guess it will just keep coming until the end of time...or the game's release. We don't know when that will be though, with more modes expected to roll out through 2015 and full release planned for early 2016.
