BioShock Movie on the Way? Sony Registers Domains

Sony Registers Three BioShock Movie Domains, Would You Kindly Make a Film?

Video game movie adaptations have an interesting track record. You have abortions like "Prince of Persia," "Double Dragon," and "Super Mario Bros.," but then you have the considerably more succesful "Tomb Raider" and "Resident Evil" flicks. There are countless games that could, given the right talent, make for even better movies, but perhaps none more so than BioShock, and Sony has just taken a few steps closer to bring it to the big screen.

Kotaku first noted that Sony Pictures now has bioshock-movie.com, bioshock-movie.net and bio-shock.net among its numerous properties. Click the links all you like, there's nothing present at any of them. Not at the moment, at least, hinting that they're probably placeholders more than anything.

A BioShock movie was originally planned for a 2011 release alongside BioShock Infinite, with Gore Verbinski set to direct. In February that year, Verbinski had stepped down from the director's chair, and confirmed that pre-production had halted, as no studio was willing to invest in an expensive R-rated film.

Last we heard, creator Ken Levine had claimed to have killed the project, saying he didn't see a match with the new director. But Levine did say that a Bioshock movie, "may happen one day, who knows, but it'd have to be the right combination of people," and perhaps these domain registrations could be a sign of things to come.

Joystiq asked publisher 2K Games about the domains, but all they heard back was "no comment," and Levine has been similarly quiet. We'll keep you posted if something official ever surfaces.
