How Does Trapping Work In 'Skylanders Trap Team'? We Learned During Our Hands-Off Demo Time

So, you've seen the announcement of the new Skylanders Trap Team game from last night, but you're probably wondering what exactly "trapping" is at it relates to the game.

Well, it's pretty simple, as we saw during our hands-off demo time last night. The usual "boss battles" in the game will now allow you to capture the villains that you've just bested - and that will include Kaos by the end of the game.

Once you've gone through the boss fight and beaten your enemy, a prompt will come up to place the requisite crystal in your Portal of Power's new traptanium crystal slot. All of the villains are type-coded just like the Skylanders - they will be either fire, water, air, life, earth, tech, undead or magic type.

When your crystal is in the portal, the villain will be transported to the crystal. The cool part is, the villain will start off talking on your screen and end up talking from the portal itself via a built-in speaker once you've captured it.

But what if you don't have the right type of crystal? Well, you can go back and fight that villain again later and capture him that way. But villains won't bank for you to capture once you've got the proper trap piece, so hopefully all or most of the traps will be available right at launch.

Lastly, when you capture villains, they get put into your "vault," as one dev put it. When you're at the "hub" (even though Tessa was in the demo, it wasn't announced if it would be Woodburrow again) you can select which villain you want to be the active one on your crystal for the upcoming level. There will be a number of villains to choose from for each element, from what it sounds like.
