Old School Square Enix Classic Final Fantasy III Heading to Steam This Summer

Of the close to two dozen Final Fantasy games, counting direct sequels and spin-offs, the one game that never made it over to the states until recently was Final Fantasy III. Now, the game's available on a multitude of platforms, and one more is about to join its ranks.

Square Enix's Final Fantasy III To Be An Ouya Launch Title

Publisher Square Enix is bringing the game to Steam "soon." The game was the first title in the Final Fantasy series to become a million-seller, ensuring the franchise wasn't going anywhere.

As it's approaching the new platform, the game was received a whole bundle of adjustments to make sure it's up to quality for a new audience. A press release listed all the new features for the game when it hits Steam:

Another Final Fantasy 7 Spin-Off Coming? Square Enix Files Trademark for Shinra Company

- New and improved 3D visuals and story sequences
- Quicker browsing through the monster bestiary and other game record
- New visual designs for the Job Mastery Cards
- Upgraded graphics
- Includes Achievements
- New feature of Steam Trading Cards

Gameplay was much the same was it was in the first two games, with turn-based combat, experience points, etc. The story was likewise par for the course as far as FF goes. Peaceful land, gets rocked by an earthquake, swallows up some crystals, unknown warriors gets a hold of crystals, yada yada yada, set forth to save the day.

But on thing the game did to set it apart was introduce the Job System, feature special battle commands like Steal and Jump, features which are still around in the games today, nearly fifteen years and God only knows how many games after Final Fantasy III's initial release.

It wasn't long ago that the game was remastered for the DS, and later ported to the Wii, iOS and Android, PSP, Windows Phone, and the game was even a launch release for the Ouya. Check out the intro from the HD version below.
