'Destiny' PS4 Trailer: Bungie Details MMO Features Of Upcoming Online Shooter, Their Version Of Live Events? [VIDEO]

Bungie Shows off Destiny's MMO Side in New Commentary Trailer

Details about online first person shooter Destiny have been coming from developer Bungie fairly consistently in the past few weeks, as we've learned much more about the game recently than we had known before. Today's new developer trailer focuses on some of the MMO-like features of Destiny's gameplay, an aspect that has remained a bit of a mystery.

The game has always been billed as a massive multiplayer shooter, but it was not entirely clear what the team meant by that. You can work with others in a group for quests, but it won't be the same as just playing a co-op campaign like in Halo or other titles.

Instead, there is a public hub as well as events you can come across while travelling. One of the most similar examples to me would be Guild Wars 2's live events, which crop up spontaneously on the world map. Anyone who wanders by the event, whether it's killing a large enemy or completing a certain task, can join in the battle with people they had not been questing with.

You're free to ignore these events too when you come across them, which is part of their appeal. If you're in the middle of a story mission and don't feel like getting involved, you can simply keep walking. Bungie doesn't necessarily hope you become best friends with anyone you work with to complete an event, but are striving to make the world more organic and unpredictable, allowing you to see and interact with others--even if you go your separate ways immediately.

The trailer also describes some previously unexplained mechanics like specials and aerial abilities, so be sure to watch it below for the full picture.
