Mojang has just announced details for the upcoming PS Vita and PS4 edtions of Minecraft. Current owners of the Minecraft: PlayStation 3 Edition have a lot to be happy about- they'll be getting a free Vita version when the upgraded version hits this August, and they can upgrade to the PS4 for cheap.

Minecraft Xbox One Edition Release Date Confirmed Too!

Both new versions will be released on the PSN in August. The Minecraft: PlayStation 4 Edition will allow "significantly bigger worlds and a greater draw distance" than the PS3 edition, and feature all the current ugdates and patches. It will cost $19.99, although if you've bought the PS3 Edition you can upgrade for $4.99 for up to a year after release date. Note that this only applies to those who have downloaded it from PSN and not those who have bought the blu-ray disc version. Those who do upgrade can bring your saves to PS4, but not backwards- basically because it's easier to make world bigger than it is to shrink them. Many of the DLC skins and texture packs from the PS3 Edition can be transferred over, but not all.

As for the Vita version, it will actually offer cross-buy functionality. That means that if you already own the PS3 edition you'll get the Vita version for free when it releases. It doesn't matter if you buy either edition for either system, once you do you'll get the other one for free. All of the DLC you've bought for the PS3 edition will work on the Vita. It supports cross-save functionality as well, which means that you can start a game on the PS3 and take it mobile on the Vita, or, as Mojang points out, "continue on the bus/toilet".

Minecraft Title Update 16 Now Available for Xbox 360

So, big news for Minecraft fans! The only place it won't be available now is on Nintendo systems, which seems like such a strange omission given their family-friendly nature.
