Apple's major annual event WWDC is ready to kick off later today, and you can expect some major news and reveals to come out of its keynote speech scheduled for 1 p.m. EDT.

The event keynote can be watched live on Apple's site when it gets closer, and I'll be updating the news as it breaks. WWDC has more to offer over several days than just the keynote, but the most relevant information to the average consumer (including software and potential hardware reveals) will be released during the main speech on stage.
As reported this weekend in preparation for the conference, signs and banners being hung in the building hosting the event more than hint at an iOS 8 reveal. A large "8" banner was displayed, as well as an "X" poster, presumably referencing that the latest version of OS X is set to be unveiled.

The inclusion of new hardware is murkier, as definitive signs or reports have been scarce. The presence of iPhone 6 would make sense, but the leading theories seem to indicate we may not see hardware at all. Apple said it would enter "exciting" new product categories this year, and CEO Tim Cook promised 2014 would see "amazing" new products come to market--but WWDC may not be the place we hear about them.
Growth has slowed for Apple, who increasingly rely only on incremental upgrades to its core brands like iPhone and iPad. A revolutionary device has not been revealed for some time, even though the company has several available avenues, such as smart homes.
Apple announced it will be buying Beats Electronics for $3 billion, which will rejuvenate some of its "cool" factor and give it a shot in the arm, but some key reveals today may be able to do more for the company's future.
