New 'Dawn of the Planet of the Apes' Poster Shows Caesar As Gun Toting, Revolutionary General

The summer movie season is just kicking into high gear, and 20th Century Fox wants you to remember that in a summer fraught with superheroes, they have someone truly super powered waiting for you. The just released Dawn of the Planet of the Apes poster is truly magnificent. Mark your calendars, folks, we may just have a winner on our hands.

The Giver Trailer Paints A World In Black And White

IGN released the poster earlier today. In it, Caesar, the ape who would be king, sits astride a horse in an image reminiscent of Washington during the Revolution. The super intelligent ape holds a gun and urges his ape kin forward while behind him the Golden Gate bridge, featured prominently in the climax of the original, burns along with the rest of San Francisco. In the dystopian, ape controlled future, this image will be in all of the history books.

The original Rise of the Planet of the Apes was perhaps the biggest surprise of 2011. That's how you reboot a franchise, people. In it, James Franco's scientist was trying to help cure John Lithgow, his father, of Alzheimer's. What do they say about the road to hell? Utilizing an experimental serum, he cures his father, for a time, but also rapidly advances the intelligence of his test subject, an ape named Caesar. It's a powerful critique on the wickedness of man and what it lacks in the action department, it makes up for with brilliant mo-cap from Andy Serkis and a very personal, human element.

Payday 2 Short Film Stars Breaking Bad's Gus Fring

The sequel, set for release July 11th, picks up years later after the plague, which was hinted at during the end of the first film, has run its course and left mankind decimated. Humanity now faces a new threat, as Caesar has created more apes like him and let me tell, an ape with a gun and intelligence just sounds terrifying.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes stars Jason Clarke, Keri Russell, Gary Oldman and Andy Serkis, as the voice and model for Caesar. It is directed by Matt Reeves and the only thing cooler than the poster is the trailer. Watch below!

With thanks to IGN for breaking the image.
