'Rise of the Tomb Raider' E3 Trailer Revealed, Play A Far Darker Lara Croft In Upcoming Sequel

Well, Square Enix registered the domain yesterday and today, they show us the first reveal trailer of the next installment in their rebooted Tomb Raider franchise.

E3 Forza 5 Trailer Is Damn Pretty

In it, Lara speaks with a concerned psychiatrist who tries to get our young heroine to deal with her grief by "taking up a hobby". The scene is intercut with those of Lara ascending a mountain in the rain, looking as determined as anyone I've ever seen. Dramatic music swells and the voices cross over one another until the final reveal of an endless system of caverns. It's quite powerful, on par with a really good trailer.

Rise of the Tomb Raider is the sequel to last year's Tomb Raider, which put players into the role of a still wet behind the ears Lara Croft. Rise will tell "...the next chapter of Lara's development..." Comic book writer Gail Simone will take over and continue the saga of everyone's favorite treasure hunter (sorry, Nathan Drake).

E3 Project Spark Trailer Turns Players Into Creators

There has been no word on a release date of any kind. Given the development process, one would expect a summer or holiday 2015 release at the earliest, but who knows how long they have been working on the game.

The original rebooted title was one of the best selling games of last year, though it was not without its controversy. The game was called out for a near-rape scene early in the first act that caused quite a bit of unrest.

Well, Lara has come back from her experiences changed, but for the better? She's a lot more calculating now and I look forward to seeing what she's capable of in Rise of the Tomb Raider. Check out the E3 trailer below.
