World Cup 2014 Best XI According To FIFA 14's Updated Player Ratings
There's only one meaningful match left in the 2014 World Cup with the final ahead, a bittersweet fact for football fans who have been enjoying one of the most dramatic and high-scoring competitions ever held.
An exciting and upset-filled group stage gave way to the somewhat more slowly-paced knockout rounds, which reached a climax in Germany's 7-1 demolition of the hosts Brazil. With only the final match left between the Germans and Argentina, I've created a best XI based on the player ratings in FIFA 14's World Cup mode.
The developers update the ratings and rosters after each round of games, so this is the most recent reflection of real-life performances. That of course means there are a lot of Germans with increased ratings, which leads to a lot of players from the nation in the best XI since many of them had high ratings to begin with.
Here is the team:
Forwards: Messi (95), Muller (89), Neymar (88), Robben (92)
Central Midfielders: Schweinsteiger (89), Toni Kroos (87)
Defenders: Marcelo (81), Hummels (85), Thiago Silva (87), Lahm (89)
Goalkeeper: Manuel Neuer (90)
I made a few concessions about where exactly each player would be on the pitch, given that Robben and Muller play on the same side, but haven't been traditional wingers this tournament. With Muller's unorthodox play and goal-scoring form, I saw it fit to stick him up top with Messi, who plays off the striker.
Marcelo and Brazil's defense may have had a very poor showing, but he's still the highest-rated left back (and it went down one) in the game. I may have taken a different midfield combination and don't believe Schweinsteiger has been their best midfielder, but those are the best according to the current ratings--what do you think?
