Adapting a brand new story into the rich, much studied and brilliant world of JRR Tolkien is difficult. Even crafting a story that's already been put down is a monumental task that yields limited results. Just ask Peter Jackson. That's why Monolith brought in Christian Cantamessa, who co-wrote Rockstar's epic Red Dead Redemption, to script the grim and gritty adventure of Talion, the undead ranger.

Cantamessa and the voice actor of Talion, Troy Baker, have an easy rapport, and say as much in the behind the scenes video. Since Talion is shouldering the brunt of the dramatic weight, and the company is pulling out all the stops and mo-capping everyone, having such an esteemed actor as Mr. Baker will give us a character we can root for. Baker previously did voice work in The Last of Us, Bioshock: Infinite and Batman: Arkham City.

The storyline itself takes place between the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings; and will be a true bridge film. Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor has been developed with the help of Jackson, Weta and numerous Tolkien experts to ensure the game falls within the Middle-Earth canon.

It's a long wait until The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies and frankly, if you have to get one game this October, and you have choices, this is the one to get really excited for.

Watch the video below and be sure to pick up the title when it hits for all major systems on October 7.
