Rollers of the Realm: Atlus USA's Pinball RPG May Be The Greatest Genre Mashup Since Puzzle Quest

ATLUS showed off Rollers of the Realm at this year's E3 and it was easily one of the most intriguing titles shown at the expo.

Abyss Odyssey Releases ATLUS Brings Us A Launch Trailer For This Stunning Roguelike

Sure, RPG mashups seem commonplace nowadays, ever since Puzzle Quest proved that RPG mechanics, storyline and characters could be inserted into other genres and work remarkably well, but no one has ever attempted pinball before.

The brilliance here is that each character is its own ball. You start off in the first few levels playing as a rouge, a light, nimble ball. You'll play through tons of short levels with various goals- trying to escape from a town, trying to fight off guards. If your rogue ball hits a guard from behind you can pickpocket them, and money can be used to upgrade various features. Each level has its own unique goals and challenges, including hidden treasure chests and paths.

Switching characters is pretty ingenous and easy- you simply hold a ball on a flipper and you'll be able to switch to the other characters to find the ball that suits your current goal best- the knight is larger and heavier and can better battle enemies, for instance, while the healer can do exactly what you'd expect.

The game is coming from Toronto-based Phantom Compass and being published by Atlus U.S.A., and is being released later this year for both PC and PS4/Vita. That last platform seems the most perfect for it, as the short levels would combine beautifully with a mobile platform.

We're already very impressed with the short taste we've had, so expect more on Rollers of the Realm as we hear it! Check out the teaser trailer below
