New Metal Gear Solid 5 Demo Debuted By Hideo Kojima At Gamescom; Both Ground Zeroes And Phantom Pain Will Get Steam Support; Watch Live [VIDEO]

Metal Gear Solid V Coming To Steam; New Gamescom Gameplay Footage Explores The Endless Possibilities Of The Game

Gamescom has only just started but it's clear that the frontrunner is not a game, but a person. Hideo Kojima has the chance to win this thing right here, right now.

Stop Freaking Out! Tomb Raider Will Be Coming To PS4

Yesterday, Kojima announced that he was teaming up with legendary genre director for the latest installment in the long running Silent Hill franchise. The game, originally titled P.T. took the convention by storm and was a complete and utter surprise.

But we can't talk Kojima without talking about Metal Gear Solid. Kojima and his translator were on hand to show off the variability of the open world. The video plays through the same Afghanistan map as the one shown at E3, but that is largely where the similarities end. The player can approach the enemy compound through any number of different routes.

The Phantom Pain is very context dependent. Timing, not only in how you take down an enemy or observe patrol routes, but the actual time of day. You can fast forward ahead to night-time if you prefer to have the cover of darkness as your ally.

The game will adapt to player actions and the game will adapt and change its difficulty level for any replays. If you overuse some weapons or techniques, the enemies will learn to compensate and adapt. The Fox Engine is quite spectacular, yeah?

The Phantom Pain picks up nine years after Ground Zeroes, the first part of the Metal Gear V. Snake has awoken from his coma and is down an arm. Don't worry, he's got a replacement, and no, it's not possessed by Liquid. Well, here's hoping it isn't, at least.

Of fun note, the famous box has been updated to include some delightful girlie cheesecake to better distract the guards when you're hiding. Or you can throw on a soldier decal so the enemy will pass you by. The box is clearly a favorite of Kojima, he showed not one, but two new videos of it. The ability to airlift foes via the Fulton, and various wild animals, and vehicles via a sort of rocket balloon system is quite awesome.

What is particularly great is that, for at least the demo, you only have the one objective: acquire the intel you need. The open-world aspect of the game leaves the strategy up to you. Unlike say, a Call Of Duty game, your hands aren't being held, told to go here or do this. Do you feel like blowing up that helicopter? Go for it. All your actions will have consequences, of course, so choose wisely.

Kiefer Sutherland, the new voice of Solid Snake, made a quick recorded message from LA. He's finishing up another voice over session, but wishes he could be there. I think that if anyone can replace David Hayter, it could only be Jack Bauer.

The biggest news, however, is that both Ground Zeroes and Phantom Pain will be coming to Steam for PC! Sadly, no release date has been given yet for the games.

There's a lot more MGS news. Gamescom attendees can find out all about it by visiting the Konami booth on the show floor.
