Box Office Mojo is reporting more than $2.5 million in tickets sold as of August 12, despite the limited run in 692 theaters. Funimation soon added additional screenings as well, further boosting the film's success after the positive reception. You can check out our review of Battle of Gods here.

Its $2.5m in sales place it 11th all-time in terms of North American anime releases--an impressive performance considering the series finished years ago. Dragon Ball Kai, a remastered version of Dragon Ball Z, is currently being broadcast, which may have helped grow the fanbase beyond those who watched the original series.

Battle of Gods experienced a much larger-scale release in its native Japan, opening in theaters nationwide. Its box office numbers comparatively crush the performance in North America, grossing roughly $30 million. The total sales outside of North America add up to just under $48 million.

Our review explained that the film seemed largely staged to set up future developments, and another movie is indeed on the way. Anime News Network reported on Shueisha's September issue of V Jump, which broke news that another Dragon Ball Z film was planned for 2015. It's set for release in the Golden Week string of holidays next spring, and is coming from manga creator Akira Toriyama.
