Apple Smartwatch Rumors: September 9 Press Event Invitations Sent, iWatch Reveal Set For That Date?

Apple Announces Launch Event for September 9

Hey, Apple fanatics--mark September 9 on your calendars. Apple has officially sent out invites for a press event on that date.

The tech press has known for a while that the Cupertino company was planning an event for that day, which is, presumably, when CEO Tim Cook will introduce the world to the iPhone 6--or, more likely, multiple iPhone 6 models. This would repeat the company's strategy from last year with the iPhone 5S and the cheaper iPhone 5C reveal, as well as agree with the rumors of dual iPhone 6 sizes. Apple has yet to say what the event is officially about, and likely won't.

"Wish we could say more," says the invitation, keeping it cryptic as always.

Last night, rumors broke on Re/code that Apple was also going to unveil its long-rumored "iWatch." An Apple branded smartwatch has been buzzed about for at least several years, with Applephiles pointing to patent applications, leaks from inside Cupertino and statements from the workers employed by the company's vast supply chain in China.

While earlier predictions claimed that Apple was releasing the smartwatch sometime in October, Re/code's John Paczkowski claimed yesterday afternoon that the watch would come out at the same time as the iPhone 6 (although he wouldn't reveal his sources or exactly why he was changing his date prediction).

While 2014 has seen several smartwatches so far, Apple is poised to break the market wide open, just like they did over the years with music players, smartphones and tablets.
