World Of Tanks Video Blog Update: The Chieftain Examines The T-34-85, One Of The Soviet's Most Versatile Tanks In World War II [VIDEO]

World Of Tanks Video Checks Out The Real World Equivalent To One Of The Game's Popular Tanks

Say what you will about Wargaming and its massively popular World of Tanks, but don't ever say that they are not dedicated to creating scarily accurate digital versions of real world tanks. Wargaming knows their business better than most national armies.

The Chieftain, Wargaming's in-house tank aficionado and expert, traveled to Russia in June to take a look at the T-34-85 Soviet tank. The first of two videos taking a look at this piece of Red armor is very thorough. It clocks in at 12 minutes, and he doesn't even get to the interior of the thing. He meticulously goes over practically every nut and bolt on the tank, from the welding techniques used to the track pins and, obviously, the size of the guns.

The T-34-85 was one of the most highly produced tanks during World War II from either side and was called by some "the most effective, efficient, and influential tank design of World War II". It was easy to produce, which for a Soviet army that suffered the loss of over 80,000 armored vehicles during the bitter campaign, was a blessing. Many still survive to this day.

When German forces invaded Russia in 1941, they were taken by surprise by the sheer power of the T-34-85. While the Soviets army was inferior in terms of infantry equipment, for the first several years their armored division were second to none.

By war's end, however, the T-34-85 and its numerous variants were outgunned in terms of sheer firepower. Their main turret cannon could not pierce the frontal armor of the German Panther tanks and though the T-34-85 ultimately turned the tide at both Stalingrad and Kursk, it was due more to overwhelming numbers and flanking maneuvers. Most tanks did see engagement, but nearly all were not designed to see more than three.

The Chieftain's video is a must for any gearhead or WWII buff out there. The technical knowhow requires a little knowledge beforehand, but he's sure to not overwhelm you with the real nitty gritty, and what is there is a very detailed look at military design.
