Original Dragon Quest Launches On iOS And Android Devices; The JRPG That Started It All Comes To A New Generation Of Players

A Man. A Dragon. A Quest. Original RPG Dragon Quest Out Now For Mobile Devices

It has been 28 years since Dragon Quest (Dragon Warrior in the U.S.) was released and introduced the world to the glory that is the JRPG. It was the original and its effects can still be felt through the gaming world today. Pick up any roleplaying game, and in essence, you are playing Dragon Quest.

Now the classic title comes to a new generation. Today, Square Enix launched Dragon Quest onto iOS and Android, fully optimized for mobile play. This is the first time in 14 years that Dragon Quest has been brought to a new system. The game, called Dragon Warrior here in the States, and its sequel were released for the Game Boy Color back in 2000.

Per the official release, "Dragon Quest is an extremely pivotal title within the industry; not only was it one of the first highly successful turn-based RPG's, but it also spawned the successful franchise and set the standard for all other role-playing video games," said Noriyoshi Fujimoto, the producer of the mobile Dragon Quest series. "We are thrilled to bring the legend of Dragon Quest to mobile devices and cannot wait for new and old fans to rediscover the RPG that won the hearts of two generations."

The game introduced a generation of kids to Alfegard, a fantastical world where monsters and magic exist. In it, you had to work your way through dungeon after dungeon to get to the Dragonlord. Because things were simple back then and you didn't have to go all meta in your storytelling like us post-modern cynics. It's simple: there's a dragon, here's your quest. Go forth. Aah, the glory days.

"The game's simple and intuitive controls mimic the classic retro game play of the never-before-released (in US) Super Nintendo version, and are optimized to work perfectly with the vertical layout of any modern mobile device. Moreover, the position of the movement button can be changed to facilitate both left and right-handed game play. In addition, Dragon Quest features a legendary trio of creators: master creator Yuji Horii, revolutionary music composer Koichi Sugiyama and art master Akira Toriyama."

The game was released in Japan last year. You can pick up the original Dragon Quest at the Apple Store and Google Play for $2.99. If you fancy yourself a bit more from the series, Dragon Quest IV Chapters of the Chosen and Dragon Quest VIII are also available.
