Avengers’ Loki Tom Hiddleston To Travel To King Kong’s Skull Island For Metal Gear Solid Director

First Hulk, Now King Kong To Beat Up Loki

Skull Island, the long-gestating prequel to the classic tale of lovelorn ape King Kong, has finally found a director and star. Deadline reports that Jordan Vogt-Roberts (The Kings Of Summer, the in-production Metal Gear Solid movie) will helm the tropical tale of adventure, while Thor and Avengers villain Tom Hiddleston will star.

Details are sketchy on Universal's big-ape-and-dinosaurs project, so let fan speculation run wild. Deadline calls the project a "Kong origin tale", but who knows how much that is just an easy descriptor to get across the idea of a "King Kong movie without it being actually just the King Kong movie you've already seen a bunch of times".

Max Borenstein, writer of this year's Godzilla, is on script duties. I guess we'll find out how much was Borenstein and how much was the Frank Darabont rewrite that removed all personality from the human characters in that movie once Skull Island hits theaters. Although, Hiddleston is certainly a more charismatic presence than Aaron Taylor-Johnson, so maybe that won't be as big an issue this time!

What do you think? Are you tired of Kong adaptations, even if they're not quite literal remakes? Do you think Hiddleston will be the Swedish captain who sold Carl Denham the map at the start of King Kong? Is Legendary building up to a Monsterverse like the MCU since they currently own the rights to Kong, Godzilla, Rodan, Mothra and King Ghidorah?
