Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain Screens From TGS 2014 Show Off Adorable Eyepatch Dog, Snake's Electric Stun Arm

Metal Gear Solid V Screens From TGS 2014 Only Confirm That The Game's Story Is Just As Ridiculous As Every Other MGS Game

Tokyo Game Show 2014 is officially behind us, but at least we got some pretty cool Metal Gear Solid V screens out of it. About half of the screens are of gameplay while the other half are of cinematics – mirroring the balance of a typical MGS game – but they come together to form one clear, overarching picture: The Phantom Pain is going to be just as absurd as its predecessors.

The screens focus on two supporting characters that will be making debuts in MGS V. The first is Diamond Dog, Snake's wolf companion. Diamond Dog rocks an eyepatch in adulthood, which ends up being more adorable than threatening. It seems that, if you're going to be a close companion of Snake, you need to follow in his footsteps and lose an eye.

Occupational hazard, I guess.

The screens also focus on Quiet, Snake's mute sniper associate, who can cover him from afar in missions. Quiet's intimidating and stoic expression is certainly on display in the screens, but what's more obvious is why Quiet's character design has been met with criticism. Kojima has stated over Twitter that there is a poignant narrative reason why Quiet wears almost no clothing.

Of course, he has also said previously that he has redesigned some of his characters to encourage cosplayers and to beef up figurine sales.

Finally, the screens also showcase Snake's electric stun arm. It looks like Snake is pulling a page out of BioShock's playbook as he charges up his robotic left hand and lets loose a stunning bolt of electricity onto an unsuspecting guard. More than anything, though, the screens show off the game's fantastic looking graphics, especially during the cinematic bits. If MGS V has anything like MGS IV's 40-60 gameplay to cinematic ratio, at least we can know that it's going to be a lovely movie to watch.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is set to hit the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, Xbox 360 and PC in 2015.
