Blizzard MMO Project Titan Canceled, Details Emerge On What Could Have Been

Blizzard announced that it has canceled the long-running development of MMO Titan (more than likely just a code name), admitting that that project was not meeting the company's aspirations.

Titan had been in development for roughly seven years, meaning the decision to scrap the project will result in many lost and wasted resources and man-hours. Speaking to Polygon, Blizzard CEO and co-founder Mike Morhaime explained the difficult decision.

"We had created World of Warcraft, and we felt really confident that we knew how to make MMOs," Morhaime said. "So we set out to make the most ambitious thing that you could possibly imagine. And it didn't come together.

Neverwinter's Next Module Will Be Rise Of Tiamat

"We didn't find the fun," Morhaime continued. "We didn't find the passion. We talked about how we put it through a reevaluation period, and actually, what we reevaluated is whether that's the game we really wanted to be making. The answer is no."

Kotaku spoke to multiple people who were at least at one point part of the development team, and came away with an idea of what Titan was shaping up to be. The story paints a picture of a future Earth split into zones controlled by three factions. Between normal day jobs, players would suit up and head out to fight against the other factions. The sources made comparisons to Team Fortress 2 in terms of style and gameplay, and classes had titles like Jumper, Reaper, Titan, and Ranger. Perspective would switch between first and third-person depending on if you were fighting or in the city hub.

There are more details in Kotaku's report about what could have been, but we'll have to trust that Blizzard was right and the fun just never materialized despite interesting elements.
