Destiny DLC The Dark Below Raid: Will Crota's End Live Up To Vault Of Glass? Here's Why It Matters

Destiny's first DLC expansion, The Dark Below, will feature a brand new raid in addition to Crucible maps, sory missions, and gear. The Crota's End raid will be the game's second, but will it live up to the Vault of Glass?

This question is worth asking for two reasons. The most simple is that fans will of course be hoping that the follow-up raid is as good as the first. The Vault of Glass got a tremendous amount of praise as Destiny's best section, and players will be looking forward to more of the surprisingly unique and interesting level design and challenges the dungeon held. A decline in gameplay quality following the Vault of Glass would be, if nothing else, disappointing.

The second reason this question is important is a little less obvious, and I suppose a matter of opinion--you may be perfectly fine with how Bungie is releasing its content. The Vault of Glass is so good, that it makes the rest of the game look sub-par. It doesn't take long for players to wonder why more of the game is not like Vault of Glass, and that's not something anyone but Bungie can answer.

Of course we want the raids to be special, but the overall quality of Destiny would have been improved with some of the gameplay hooks used in the high-level dungeon. As such, if Bungie can recreate Vault of Glass' magic and Crota's End is just as enjoyable, it opens up the door for different possibilities going forward.

DLC focused on this content would surely be more popular than a slight level increase and story missions that retread old ground. If the high quality content found in Vault of Glass is something Bungie can reproduce (and they now know how well-received it is), at least elements of it should be seen everywhere in the game. Additonal missions will seem relatively trivial going forward, and single-shot raid releases could be endlessly more rewarding. There needs to be new missions and items to supplement the purpose of the raids, yes, but the developers have shown that they're capable of more--why leave the rest of the content with uninspired missions and bullet sponge bosses? We should all hope Crota's End is every bit as good as Vault of Glass.
