The popular video and voice chat service has only been available as a downloadable app or program in the past, but a web-based version is being rolled out to a small number of new and existing users in beta form.

Skype.com will offer the service for Chrome for Windows, Firefox, Safari, and Internet Explorer on your computer. The blog post announcement suggests some examples you may need to use Skype without downloading-perhaps you're on a café or hotel computer. Skype for web certainly has realistic applications, and it's another way to make using the service more convenient.

You will be able to sign in to your existing account on Skype.com, giving access to your past calls, contacts, and messaging conversations. For the time being, anyone who is given access to Skype for web will need to install a small Real-Time Communications plug-in on their browser to make it work. RTC for web is being developed, but the plug-in will have to suffice until then. Skype for Web will continue to roll out to all users worldwide over the coming months-invites will begin appearing in Skype.com accounts through that time.
