Hackers unite! Really! But not to take down a mega corporation or the government. Programing industry greats are asking their fellows to join forces to help make everyone a better programmer. To this end, they created the hack.pledge() in an effort to get programmers from all levels to work together to help the industry become more uniform.

The movement is helmed by such people as Bram Cohen, inventor of Bittorrent and Grady Booch, inventor of the Unified Modeling Language. They and other established coders are asking developers to join forces to help bridge the gap between average programmers and great programmers. "There is currently a 10x-100x difference in productivity between an average programmer and a great one" said Ed Roman, founder of hack.pledge() pointing out the huge discrepancy of skill between ok and the best. Such discrepancies simply don't exist in other fields and they hope to help destroy it by coming together as a community where each one teaches one.

The pledge, in a nutshell, is that all developers who sign commit to either teaching for an hour or to learn for an hour. It's the founders' hope that this simple exchange will help to build a community of developers, improve standards and help bring more diversity to the field. Mentors and mentees will be matched based on needs and knowledge base.
