Google Releases Android 5.0.1 Lollipop Update, Fixes Nexus 7 Video Playback Issues

Android Update 5.0.1 Is Now Rolling Out

Google has started rolling out its first update for its new Android 5.0 mobile operating system, fixing a video playback issue on the Nexus 7 and taking care of a bug that could have accidentally reset a user's phone.

Even though most Android users haven't seen sign of Google's latest Android 5.0 update, many Nexus owners can now enjoy the first patch of the retooled mobile software. Android 5.0.1 is now available for the Nexus 7, Nexus 10 and the new Nexus 9.

Nexus 7 users should be especially grateful for the patch, as it seems to clear up an issue many users had with video playback. If you're a Nexus 7 owner who has had difficulties getting YouTube videos to play on your phone after downloading Android Lollipop, you should look into updating your version of Android. It looks like it clears up the issue, at least according to users on Google's forums.

Another small update contained in this patch preemptively removes a bug that could have caused some Nexus devices to accidentally perform a factory reset. Users who updated their device to run Android Lollipop had the option to force their phone to reset after a certain number of failed log-in attempts. It's a security measure to ensure a phone thief can't force their way into a phone just by repeatedly guessing different passwords.

With the new update, inputs that consist of fewer than four elements won't be counted as a log-in attempt. So if a user starts unintentionally keying in single digits while shuffling their phone around, they won't be in danger of accidentally setting off this particular security measure.

Android 5.0 Lollipop was launched last month alongside Google's new Nexus 9 tablet and Nexus 6 phablet. Though Nexus owners can now get their hands on the upgraded features, most Android users are still waiting for their own manufacturers to send out their own version of the update.
