Android 5.0 Lollipop Hits The Google Play Editions Of The HTC One M8 And M7

HTC One M8 owners should be able to pick up Google's recent Android 5.0 update today, assuming they bought their phones directly from Google Play.

Mo Versi, HTC's vice president of product management, confirmed over Twitter yesterday that the OTA update for Android 5.0 Lollipop would start today at noon Pacific for HTC One M8 owners. He later confirmed that the update was now approved for the HTC One M7, as well.

Both of these update confirmations, however, are only for the Google Play Editions of these phones, meaning their owners purchased them unlocked from Google Play instead of from a specific carrier. Without carrier-specifc software additions to go through, Android updates can go out to Google Play phones much more quickly.

Android 5.0 Lollipop revamps the user interface of Android devices, implementing what Google calls "material design," a colorful interface that focuses on realistic lighting to make navigation easier. Lollipop also includes upgrades in terms of both battery efficiency and device security.

Android 5.0 made its public debut last month, releasing alongside launch devices like the new Nexus 9 tablet and Nexus 6 smartphone. Its first patch, Android 5.0.1, actually went out this week. The small update hoped to fix a few issues, including video playback bugs on the Nexus 7 and a potential bug that could cause Android devices to accidentally perform a factory reset.
