Some Destiny Weekly Heroic Strikes Require The Dark Below, Will Lock Out Players Without The Expansion

Destiny's current weekly Strike mission, which offers bonus rewards compared to the other Strikes that week, requires the new The Dark Below expansion.

This will no doubt anger fans who don't plan to purchase the expansion, as the bonuses from the weekly Strikes are a boon to character progression. Bungie stepped in to clarify that the weekly Strikes will not all require The Dark Below from now on, but will rotate between the old and new missions.

"All existing strikes and maps are still accessible," Bungie head of community Eric Osborne told Polygon. "Specific activities like nightfall will periodically feature expansion 1 content on the week the newest content is live.

"New public events, updated weapons and gear, new bounties, and of course the steady stream of updates are all available without additional cost to all players."

Our Review Of Civilization: Beyond Earth

The Dark Below brings a new Strike to all consoles, Will of Crota, and an additional Strike to PlayStation consoles only, Undying Mind. These are cooperative missions with bosses, the second most challenging mission type in the game behind its Raids. It's unfortunate for players without the expansion, as they'll essentially be locked out of the Heroic Strikes and Nightfall missions occasionally (such as this week) at no fault of their own, and it remains to be seen if Bungie will address this.

The Dark Below is available for purchase individually for $19.99 or through the Expansion Pass ($34.99), which will also give you access to the next expansion.
