Minecraft: Story Mode Announced: New Telltale Games Episodic Series Will Feature New Characters, Not Steve

Telltale Does Minecraft

It's official- Telltale is taking over the world. After making adventure games for Game of Thrones, Borderlands, and The Walking Dead, they're moving on to Minecraft in 2015. Is there anything the company can't do?

Life Is Strange Release Date Announced For January: Square's Own Episodic Series

Minecraft: Story Mode was jointly revealed by Telltale and Mojang this morning, and as with their last titles it will be an episodic game that focuses on characters and story- two things Minecraft isn't exactly known for.

Mojang announced it via a clever little browser-based adventure game called Info Quest II that's playable right here. It tells exactly what the game will be and teases Minecraft 2 a bit so make sure to check it out.

The game reveals that Telltale won't be using the company's assets for Minecraft: Story Mode, but it will look close enough. "This thing won't look exactly like Minecraft, but it will feel authentic in its own special way," it says. "Keen crafters won't be disappointed."

While Telltale will be writing the series they'll be doing it with the support of Mojang. The first episode will hit "sometime in 2015" for every platform their current games do- Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, PS4, PC, Mac and iOS and Android devices. There's no word yet on how many episodes the game will contain, although the standard is typically five (Game of Thrones is going to be the exception, with six).

The game won't feature series mainstay Steve or flesh out his background- it will feature brand new characters inspired by the game. So now for 2015 we'll have the continuation of the excellent Tales From The Borderlands (our review) and Game of Thrones series which just kicked off this month, as well as Minecraft.

Is that it, Telltale? You can't possibly have more up your sleeves, right? Whatever the case, we have a ton of adventure gaming goodness to look forward to next year. More on Minecraft: Story Mode as we hear it!
