Uber Raises Fee For NYC Yellow Taxis, Adds $2 Booking Charge For Every UberT Ride

Uber has announced that its service will be adding a $2 surcharge to the use of yellow taxi cabs in New York City hailed through Uber's app.

The Interview Has Released Online Through YouTube, Google Play, And More

Motherboard reported that uberT, the service that hails NYC taxis, will now cost users $2 more than other Uber rides. The company announced the change in a Christmas Eve email to NYC Uber users.

The post over at Motherboard describes some of the concerns with the move, which seem profit-motivated despite claiming to help the drivers. We'll let you read and determine for yourself--here's Uber's email:

"Thanks for riding uberT. Starting today, December 24, all completed uberT trips will be subject to a $2 booking fee. This fee is a small charge added to uberT trips on behalf of yellow and boro taxi drivers who utilize the Uber platform. The fee will be collected through the app and billed to the card on file at the end of your ride. You will continue to pay the metered fare directly to your driver.

We want to take this opportunity to introduce uberX, the low-cost Uber. Cars on uberX are hybrids or mid-range vehicles in a variety of colors, and with rates cheaper than an NYC taxi, there's no better way to get around!"

Uber's aggressive strategies have certainly rubbed people the wrong way before, and this will look to push yellow cabs further to the side. The email claims to help the taxi drivers, but also goes on to introduce a new service that aims to further subvert the use of taxis. The policies have been working from Uber's perspective as the company continues to grow and gain influence, but you have to wonder if a breaking point is on the way.
