PS4 Sales Reach 18.5 Million Units As Of January 4, PlayStation Plus Subscriptions Continue To Grow

Sony announced last night that sales of the PlayStation 4 have reached 18.5 million units, up roughly 5 million since the end of October.

The numbers were announced in a Japanese press release, the contents of which were translated and reported by Reuters. The numbers are no doubt uplifting for Sony, who has been struggling financially as a whole and suffered both the recent security leak and Christmas PSN attack.

According to Reuters, Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Andrew House recently stated that demand in Europe was so high they were finding it difficult to keep up the supply--the numbers could have been even better. Sony also revealed that PlayStation Plus has pushed on to 10.9 million subscribers, up from October's 7.9 million. The premium membership is needed to play games online, but also offers free monthly titles and a discount on the PlayStation Store.

Xbox One still lags behind the PS4, though it had finally outsold it for a month in November. Holiday bundles and price cuts boosted Xbox One sales, but we have not had an updated figure in some time. Last Microsoft said, its console had shipped (not sold through to customers) 10 million units as of November.
