World Of Tanks News: Weekend Event Commemorates WWII's Battle Of Luzon With Historical Mission

Earn Gear, Learn History: World Of Tanks' Weekend Game Event Takes You To The World War 2 Battle Of Luzon

One of the great things about World of Tanks - beyond the quality artillery combat - is the inclusion of famous historical battles into the game. 2015 marks the 70th anniversary of the final year of World War II, with the European campaign winding down but the Pacific still up for grabs. Who said learning had to be boring?

Wargaming unveiled a new, limited time mission that runs from now until Monday, January 12. Commemorating the start of the Battle of Luzon, players are tasked with two new objectives that should keep them busy all weekend.

Should you find yourself in a standard, non-Premium vehicle, go out and just damage an enemy and boost your crew's experience. A 3x modifier is in place, and yes, the task is repeatable. If you have a bit of time on your hands, you can try for the 'Continuous Attacks' objective:

Nintendo eShop Weekly Update: Swing Low, Sweet Chariot

"Win 25 battles, and in each of those battles earn one of the following achievements: Fire for Effect, Bruiser, Duelist, Shellproof, Hand of God, Demolition Expert, Arsonist, Fighter, Confederate, Patrol Duty, Tank Sniper, High Caliber, Defender, Invader, Steel Wall or Top Gun." And you will come home with a brand new Enhanced Gun Laying Drive. Earnable only once. And you must be using either American or Japanese tanks.

The Battle of Luzon was an eight month siege of the Phillipine island that began on January 9, 1945 and was not concluded until the unconditional surrender from the Empire of Japan on August 15 later that year. The majority of the battle was fought during the winter of 1945, with the Allied forces securing major landmarks, hills and resources come March.

Luzon was the largest island in the Phillippines and, according to General MacArthur who would lead the attack, key to allied victory. Over 1 million Allied men would set foot on the island, and of the estimated 287,000 Japanese soldiers deployed onto Luzon, reports put the number of casualties at 200,000.

Remember kids, school isn't the only place to learn. Good hunting out there this weekend.
