New Mario Kart 8 Gameplay Video Shows Just How Much Faster The New 200cc Difficulty Is

The most recent Nintendo Direct dumped a lot of information on fans, including some announcements about Mario Kart 8 late on in the video.

One of these was the inclusion of a new difficulty mode--a 200cc speed debuting in the series for the first time. The difficulties have normally come in three intervals: 50cc (beginner) 100cc (intermediate) and 150cc (expert), but 200cc will be upping the ante further. A new gameplay video of 200cc in action can be seen below.

It's very helpfully running parallel to 150cc video, so you can see what exactly the difference is between the two. We saw the new speed debut in the Nintendo Direct, but it was difficult to judge how much faster it was on its own.

Now, we can tell 200cc is very clearly much faster than even the speediest current difficulty--Mario is absolutely zooming through the Piranha Plant Pipeway course at a much faster pace than 150cc. 200cc is coming as a free update alongside the new DLC on April 23.

The two speeds start in the same place before the 150cc feed is quickly left in the dust. At one point Mario is exiting the water section of the level at 200cc just as the 150cc Mario is entering it. As the race goes on the lead only becomes more dramatic--200cc Mario is well into his second lap before 150cc Mario finishes his first. The difference is that dramatic, and it's good to see the bump up is worthwhile and not just a moderate increase. Over the course of longer races, I imagine the new speed would lap the old.
