'Overwatch' News: New Competitive Play Update Drops Today

It's finally here: "Overwatch" players on PC can now try out Competitive Play mode.

The new ranked play mode, which will pit players against each other based on a personal skill rating instead of different tiers as in "Hearthstone," another Blizzard game, comes in an update that the company has released today. However, "Overwatch" players on Playstation 4 and Xbox One will have to wait just a little bit longer for the patch to hit their systems.

"We wanted to be upfront and let players know that we won't be able to release our Competitive Play patch on all platforms at the same time," said Lylirra, a community manager on Battle.net tasked to deliver the press release about the "Overwatch" patch. "We know this isn't an ideal way to deliver new content, so we're going to continue to refine our patching processes over the next few months in an effort to sync up our release dates across platforms as closely possible."

The summer Competitive Play season will also be lasting only one and a half months instead of the originally-advertised three, in order for players to get rewards sooner and to continue troubleshooting the format. This will be the only two-month ranked season of "Overwatch," ending on August 18, with future seasons being full-length. There will be a two-week season break in between as well.

Also, Blizzard has already revealed what sort of changes players can expect during the fall season, including sudden death scenarios for escort maps, and the like. Other changes include golden weapons and new penalties for leavers (such as a -75% decrease to EXP for a short time).

As previously reported here on Gamenguide, "Overwatch"'s Competitive Play went into open beta last week after being tested during closed beta and being removed at launch.
