Joss Whedon Praises James Gunn, Says His Take on ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’, though "Twisted", is Close to the Source

There are nearly five upcoming movies from the Marvel Studio stables with confirmed release dates. One out of those is not a sequel and is a little different from the rest. It is unfamiliar too.

"Guardians of the Galaxy" will be an ambitious movie adaptation, as it has other-worldy heroes and takes place in outer space. Screen Rant calls it the "riskiest film" from Marvel Studios.

The role of directing this movie has fallen into the hands of James Gunn, director of "Slither" and "Super." Joss Whedon of the "Avengers", who is the "godfather" of Marvel and is assisting as a creative adviser on the studio's upcoming movies, said he trusted Gunn, who will bring in a "twisted" angle, but one that is close to the movie's source.

The director of "Avengers" spoke to MTV at the Toronto International Film Festival.

"You know, James is what makes me think it will work. I myself was sort of like, 'Well, I liked Rocket Raccoon as a kid, but I'm not sure how that plays [to a wider audience].' And then they said, 'Well, we're thinking about using James Gunn.' And I said, 'Oh, then no, you're fine.' He is so off the wall, and so crazy, but so smart, such a craftsman and he builds from his heart," Whedon said. "He loves the raccoon. Needs the raccoon... This is the guy who wrote 'The Specials' which is one of the most important movies... People don't understand how influential that movie was about heroes, about taking heroes and making them mundane. And [he directed] 'Super'... He has a very twisted take on it, but it all comes from a real love of the material so you know he's going to make the Raccoon... It's going to be hard for the humans to keep up."

Whedon signed a deal with Marvel Studios where he will not only be an integral part of "The Avengers 2" by writing and directing the movie, but will also be a creative consultant to the studio's other movies that are in the pipeline.

Gunn is a safe bet to make "Guardians of the Galaxy." The studio will now be determining the casting for the movie.

"Guardians of the Galaxy" will be released to theatres Aug. 1, 2014.
