Watch out, fans: stealth classic "Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell," a game that redefined the genre, is now available for free download. The catch? No big deal: you have 30 days to go get it.
"Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell" publisher Ubisoft is celebrating its 30th anniversary by giving away seven of its classic titles for free. After they gave away "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time" last month, "Splinter Cell" is this month's free digital download. All you have to do is go to Ubisoft Club, get an account if you don't have one yet, and download the game within 30 days. After you do, the copy you have is all yours—no locks, no restrictions, no nothing. You're free to relive the experience of playing Sam Fisher.
Five more games are coming through the Ubisoft Club pipeline, but we don't know what they are yet; the next announcement is coming sometime in the middle of August. (We have a feeling that it could be one of the following: "Battle Realms," "Beyond Good & Evil," the original "Assassin's Creed," "Far Cry," "IL-2 Sturmovik," or "Heroes of Might and Magic." Just a feeling.) GameSpot also reports that Ubisoft will be giving away free DLC for "Tom Clancy's The Division" as part of its anniversary celebrations. We'll update you on what the next games are when we get more information.
"Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell," which came out 14 years ago (!) in 2002 for the Xbox, Playstation 2, Game Boy Advance, Gamecube, PS2, and mobile, spawned an entire franchise of seven stealth games. The latest entry in the series was "Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Blacklist" back in 2013, still featuring Sam Fisher as the protagonist. A "Splinter Cell" movie is also in the works, starring Tom Hardy.
