The game console wars continue and Microsoft is seen jumping the gun with the imminent release of the Xbox One S expected next month. With that in mind, such could hint at Sony possibly forced into a corner and releasing its own PlayStation 4 Neo.
The Xbox One S release rumors have ramped up following the slashed prices happening on the original Xbox One. The latest price drop to $249 is the third one for Microsoft and usually this indicates a move to dispose old units, Polygon reported.
No official word from Sony
For its part, Sony has not made any formal announcement regarding its plan for a PS4 Neo release. Sony has kept a tight lid on the possible release of their next game console with most of the features coming from the grapevine.
Among the features that the PS4 Neo could bring include PlayStation VR compatibility, 4K display support and expected hardware upgrades. Neurogadget believes that the Sony may release the PS4 Neo at about the same time the PS Virtual Reality comes out which is in October.
Misquoting Paul Raines?
GameStop CEO Paul Raines may have been misquoted as a reference that the PS4 Neo is coming out this year. It was during an interview with CNBC today where the PS4 Neo and the Xbox One S were tackled.
Raines was talking about the Nintendo NX which was not due until next year. Somewhere during the course of the conversation, he was mentioning the two game consoles set to come out this year. Apparently he was only talking about the Xbox One S with most likely misinterpreting the statement.
"Yes, there will be a new Nintendo console launch in March 2017," said Raines. "But remember, there are two different form factors: a PS4 Neo and an Xbox One new slim version. So there will be some activity and upgrades, along with the VR."
GameStop explains that Raines never mentioned anything about the PS4 Neo but rather mentioned on upcoming hardware upgrades.
