'Guardians of the Galaxy 2' Release Date, News & Update: Why the GOTG2 Footage Isn't Online Yet; Sylvester Stallone in a New Role?

The San Diego Comic Con proved to be a hit among attendees and the unfortunate souls who did not make it to the weekend-long event and bug budget studios Warner Bros., Disney, and Marvel took the opportunity to showcase several trailers that audiences have long been thirsty for.

Among those showcased was that of "Guardians of the Galaxy 2," the James Gunn-written and directed sequel to the 2014 smash hit that brought about what some may call the "galaxy Avengers."

Marvel released the first footage of "Guardians of the Galaxy 2" in a panel led by Gunn and attended by stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, and newcomers Pom Klementieff who will play the newest Guardian, Mantis, and Kurt Russel, who was revealed to be playing Star-Lord's father, Ego The Living Planet.

According to Deadline, the technicalities of how he transformed into a human being (complete with a penis) to impregnate Peter Quill's mother remains to be seen in the trailer, which has yet to be released online, as with most trailers. Speaking of the trailer, the social media savvy director took to Facebook to explain why the studio opted out of publishing the "Guardians of the Galaxy 2" trailer online as soon as SDCC ended, in contrast to the other films which debuted trailers in SDCC and subsequently uploaded it to YouTube.

Fans, it all boils down to this: Gunn is a perfectionist and if anything makes it online, he wants it to be the finished product and not a half-baked attempt at a trailer. According to Collider, Gunn promised that fans who did not make it to SDCC will see the trailer eventually, as soon as the finishing touches have been placed. "It’s very early days. We’ve only been finished shooting for a month," Gunn explained. "The visual effects are not finished."

Meanwhile, another heavyweight was surprisingly added to the "Guardians of the Galaxy 2" roster, as Sylvester Stallone made an appearance in the trailer. No details have surfaced about the role he plays in the upcoming film, but he was dressed in Nova Corps garb, so he must be a captain or official of sorts.

"Guardians of the Galaxy 2" debuts in theaters on April 25, 2017.
