'Mortal Kombat' Release Date, News & Update: Producer James Wan Isn't in a Rush to Release Film

The "Mortal Kombat" film has quite a long and complicated history since the Paul W. S. Anderson-directed and Lawrence Kasanoff-produced big picture was released to massive success in 1995. It was followed by a sequel titled "Mortal Kombat: Annihilation" in 1997, which earned significantly less than its predecessor.

So many years passed before New Line Cinema announced a reboot in 2011, headed by Kevin Tancharoen ("Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.," "Flash," "Supergirl," "Arrow"). However, Tancharoen decided to part with the project in 2013, announcing his departure on Twitter.

Two years later, "Mortal Kombat" found a producer in James Wan, whose credits include the "Insidious" films, "The Conjuring" films, and "Furious 7." Wan, however, seems to be taking his time in the overdue project.

IGN spoke with the producer during the Television Critics Association press tour, in which Wan was helping promote CBS' "MacGyver" series, a project he is directing. Wan admitted that "Mortal Kombat" is still in development, something he says he wants to "do it right."

Wan admitted that he didn't want to speed up the process of creating and releasing the "Mortal Kombat" film, but instead, " take our time to make sure it's heading in the right direction." He said that the slow-but-sure way to approach the project is more important than churning out a bad film that no one would want to see.

Wan also admitted that he was definitely inspired by the original "Moral Kombat" characters as a child, calling them "colorful" and "interesting" because it's a different take on "Enter the Dragon." He also admitted that it would be a fascinating world to explore in film because it's a "mythical, bigger word that lives on another dimension on top of ours."

There's no due date for "Mortal Kombat" the reboot yet, so fans will have to check back for more updates soon.
