'Gears of War 4' Latest News, Release Date & Update: Horde Mode Footage Unveiled, Coalition Shares the Gender-Optional Idea for Dominic

Last weekend's PAX West 2016 event was a treat for "Gears of War 4" fans who were looking to try their hand at the new Horde Mode, which the Coalition delightfully brought back to the highly anticipated game. Several media outlets were able to sample the Horde Mode, which was received with positive feedback.

Over at Polygon, Charlie Hall commends "Gears of War 4"'s Horde Mode, calling it an "exciting experience" and "the very best part of each game in the series." He also called it "egalitarian," because of the collaborative effort gamers had to exert in order to succeed in getting past the 10 waves before meeting the big bad boss of them all.

"Gears of War 4" Horde Mode features five classes in the form of soldier, sniper, scout, heavy, and engineer, all of which will play a vital role in the battle. According to lead multiplayer designer Ryan Cleven, it will be vital for engineers and scouts to work together to rebuild fortifications. The soldier, heavy, and sniper, on the other hand, are all tasked to carry the load of the battle, whether it's through assault rifle play, bombing enemies, or defeating opponents through warfare. Each class has a series of skill cards, which at the beginning will be at three. As the game progresses and players level up, it will expand to five skill cards. All of this makes for an interesting gameplay.

In other "Gears of War 4" news, producer Rod Fergusson dropped some interesting details about the original conception of the game. It turns out that when they first thought of the co-op player Dominic, they figured that the player should be able to pick the character's gender.

IGN reports that according to Fergusson, it was merely an idea that never came to fruition, mostly because by creating two genders, they would need to create two separate stories as well. It was Cliff Bleszinksi who shut down the idea, but now that Fergusson returned to work on "Gears of War 4," he's looking to bring back that option. He explained that instead of two genders, however, players will choose from two different perspectives of Dell or Kate.

"Gears of War 4" arrives on Xbox One and Windows PC on October 11. The upcoming game is a Xbox Play Anywhere title, so a purchase on the Xbox platform guarantees a Windows PC version, or vice versa.
