First Issue of Injustice: Gods Among Us Prequel Comic Now Available for Download

We've seen a whole number of DC's finest heroes and villains premiere, one after the other, for NeatherRealm's brawler, Injustice: Gods Among Us, but we've yet to understand the story that brings them all together.

Enter the Injustice comic, penned by Tom Taylor, with art by Jheremy Raapack. "Superman faces opponents who can battle him on equal terms. How did it come to this? This new series tells the story before DC's latest, highly anticipated videogame, from the makers of Mortal Kombat."

Speaking with Comic Book Resources, Taylor promises the book will be every bit as gripping as NeatherRealms promises the game will be, claiming, "Our series shows the tragic, soul-destroying events leading up to this brave new world. Don't expect a lot of rainbows and kittens."

Taylor reflects NeatherRealm's head Ed Boon sentiments towards the country's first super hero, who once promised, "Our Superman isn't quite the same Superman that you grew up with." Taylor said that writing Superman was a dream come true, "but with 'Injustice,' that dream has quickly become a nightmare. The events in this series are just -- horrible. I think my love for this character meant I knew exactly how to hurt him. I'm not lying when I say this has been the hardest thing I've ever written. No one should have to do this to their hero. No one."

Evidently, Supes faces down some pretty harsh events, that look to shape him into some sort of dictator, not unlike the alterna-verse arc, "Red Son," just with less hammer and sickles.

Taylor promises the comic will be just as dark as the game, all thanks to the Kombat "kreators" at NeatherRealm. "The source material and the great game script Brian Chard, Dominic Cianciolo, John Vogel and the people at NetherRealm put together has really informed this series. There's no doubt that our book has a darker tone than anything I've ever written before and that's largely because of the work that has come before, rather than the darkness lurking in my own mind. I guess what I'm saying is, 'blame them.'"

Injustice: Gods Among Us is set to be released this April, for Wii U, PS3, and Xbox 360.
