PlayStation VR Headset Release Date, News & Update: Sony’s New Device Also Works With Xbox One, Wii U & PC; How?

The PlayStation VR headset was recently launched, and players using other consoles realized that it is compatible with their devices. Matching the PlayStation VR headset with the Xbox One actually renders very good results, according to some users.

Polygon revealed that the PlayStation VR headset can easily be plugged into the PlayStation 4 or Xbox One via the HDMI cable. If properly linked, users should find the Xbox One menu very close to their face when they turn the PlayStation VR headset on. Xbox One games are not optimized for the headset, so players should expect some imperfections in the immersion. Players will find a static screen with no head-tracking. It will be similar to playing Xbox One in cinematic mode.

ArsTechnica stated that users can plug the PlayStation VR headset into the controller to gain sound, although Xbox One players should not expect the 360-degree audio that PlayStation VR games can provide. Even when plugged into a Wii U or PC, the PlayStation VR headset immediately featured games. When using the device on other consoles, there was no noticeable lag and the audio was decent.

When linking the PlayStation VR headset to an Xbox One or other systems, a large flat 2D screen will appear just a few feet in front of the user in VR space. The virtual display will remain in place when users tilt their heads. Absent an external camera, the PlayStation VR headset cannot adjust the virtual view when players move their head to different directions. PC games made for the HTC Vive or Oculus Rift, however, will not recognize the PlayStation VR headset at all.

The PlayStation VR headset is currently available at $399. The new device is set to contend with the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift, although analysts expect it to fare better in the market because of its lower price and the large population of PlayStation 4 owners. The PlayStation VR is expected to remain a niche product in the next few years. Naturally, those who already own a PlayStation device will benefit most from the new device, but the recently revealed compatibility with Xbox One should encourage others to avail.
