Poland's Total-Ban on Abortion Is Protested Nationwide

Abortion has been an ongoing global issue whether it should be legalized or not. However, there are countries who have strictly implemented the Anti-Abortion Law with some restrictions. Poland allows abortion only in special circumstances, such as when the woman's life or health is endangered if the pregnancy is continued, when the pregnancy is a result of a criminal act like rape and/or incest or when the fetus is seriously malformed.

On Oct. 06 this year, Poland's MP (Member of Parliament) rejected a near-total ban on abortion following the mass demonstration protesting against it. Women's rights activists rallied outside the parliament building in Warsaw, reports BBC NewsThe leader of the governing Law and Justice Party (PiS), Jaroslaw Kaczynski said in an interview with Polska Agencja Prasowa (PAP) in Polish, "We will strive to ensure that even in pregnancies which are very difficult, when a child is sure to die, strongly deformed, women end up giving birth so that the child can be baptized, buried, and have a name."

He also added that his socially conservative party is getting its hands on a new restrictive bill. The Roman Catholic religion is dominant in the country by about 65 percent of Polish citizens. In Europe, they already have the tightest abortion law. Earlier this month, there has been a drafted law punishing women who had abortion with a five-year imprisonment, and the doctors who helped to pursue the abortion will also have their time in jail.

Nonetheless, thousands of women in Poland have protested against the total ban on abortions wearing black clothes to demonstrate their mourning for their ‘reproductive rights'. They took their time off from work, school, and didn't do any chores just to hold the protest which they theoretically called, "Black Monday". Poland, officially Republic of Poland, is the world's 34th most populous country. It has embraced Christianity, and has become overwhelmingly Roman Catholic.
