The first two episodes of "Jane the Virgin" Season 3 were laden with twists and surprises at every turn. First, Michael Cordero (Brett Dier) survived the gunshot that sent him straight from the wedding to the hospital, while Xo Villanueva (Andrea Navedo) confessed that she'd aborted her baby. But perhaps the biggest surprise of all was Jane (Gina Rodriguez) and Rafael Solano (Justin Baldoni) taking their relationship to another level: the friendzone.
Sorry, Team Rafael: the handsome doctor has finally realized he no longer has feelings for the titular character of "Jane the Virgin" Season 3, finally putting an end to his love triangle with Jane and husband Michael. Does this mean, however, that all hopes are dashed for any possibility of Jane getting married to Rafael? Will Jane and Rafael ever get back together?
Moving characters forward in 'Jane the Virgin' Season 3
According to showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman, the primary reason why she'd decided to kill off the love triangle between Michael, Jane and Rafael was to push the characters in "Jane the Virgin" Season 3 forward. After all, Jane getting married had been a huge step for her character, and it's about time that the other characters in "Jane the Virgin" Season 3 do the same as well.
Urman said that apart from having outgrown the love triangle, releasing Rafael from his unrequited love for Jane will allow him to develop "new, full and interesting relationships" rather than just waiting on the wings for the couple to break up. This means that Rafael could potentially get new love interests in "Jane the Virgin" Season 3. In fact, Snyder herself revealed in an interview with IndieWire that Rafael was going to meet a new woman in "Jane the Virgin" Season 3 Episode 5.
Jane-Rafael; losing virginity?
Even moving forward, however, Urman does not want to close her doors on the possibility of Rafael and Jane getting back together in "Jane the Virgin" Season 3. After all, the two still face the daunting task of raising little Mateo. She said the series isn't over yet, which means there's still possibility that the narrative might eventually see the two together at the end.
With Michael safe and sound in their homes, Jane losing her virginity in "Jane the Virgin" Season 3 is imminent. In another Indiewire report, Snyder revealed that the show will be exploring how changing that aspect of Jane would affect her in the series. She also half-joked that they're still going to name the series "Jane the Virgin," but underlining the "virgin" or adding some ridiculous line like "Jane the Guilty Catholic" above it. "Jane the Virgin" Season 3 airs every Monday on The CW.
