'Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate' Details Turn Up

Seems GamingEverything wasn't happy with just providing the particulars of the latest Batman console game, now they've got Game Informer's details for the handheld game that will release alongside it, "Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate."

Set to arrive for both PS Vita and Nintendo's 3DS, "Blackgate" will be a 2D sidescroller in the same vein as the original "Metroid" series, and is currently under development by Armature, the same studio who worked alongside Kojima Productions for "Metal Gear Solid HD Collection" on the PS Vita.

"Blackgate" takes place before the first two "Arkham" games, but after "Origins," so you may want to play through "Origins" before picking this one up, lest you're all about the spoilers. As the title indicates, it takes place on the island where the Blackgate prison stands. A prison uprising has begun, and it's up to Batman to go in, and put a stop to the riot. Guess he was able to convince the cops he was a good guy after all.

The game follows the "Metroidvania" standard fairly well; a sidescroller set along a 2D plane, featuring the same style of exploration with interconnected passages and secrets to backtrack for and uncover. Despite the 2D limitations, players will be able to fight, interact, and explore with enemies and objects in both the foreground and background.

As per usual, Bats will have access to his usual array of gadgetry he'll pick up along the way that will aid in both combat and exploration. Batarangs, explosive gel, and the line launcher have all been confirmed for the game, as well as others. Combat is also said to be similar to the other "Arkham" games. A simple press of the appropriate button can have the Batman counter blows, use equipment, or unleash a flurry of combos. Likewise, Batman's predator and detective mode are also present. Bats can still hide in the usual array of floor grates, vents, gargoyles, and take down enemies stealthily with glide kicks, choke holds, and the like.

Unlike other "Metroidvania" games, players won't have to worry about finding a save room, they'll be able to save the game manually whenever they want. There's also a modern checkpoint system in place. Exploration isn't as strict either. The team says that once players figure out where they want to go, they'll be able to defeat bosses in whatever order they like.

I enjoy the Batman games of late, and likewise for a great many of the "Metroidvania" games. But together? We'll just have to wait and see. In the mean time, here are those screenshots. The game is scheduled to release on the PS Vita and Nintendo 3DS.
