Steam Has a New Rival: Facebook's Gameroom; Digital Distribution Platform Bans Misleading Store Page Screenshots

Is Facebook's Gameroom the new rival of Steam? The social network company released its own gaming platform called Gameroom.

Facebook launched Gameroom after the company lost its mobile gaming to iOS and Android, according to Tech Crunch. Before the tech giant named the app as Gameroom, it underwent several name changes.

Finally, the social network officially named their app as Gameroom and opened up beta build for all developers. The game app is available to download on Windows 7 and up.

The app developed by Facebook allows users to play web, ported mobile and other Gameroom games in a dedicated PC app free from the distractions of the News Feed.

Gameroom is now a new rival of Steam, a digital distribution platform. However, it may not be easy for this app to compete with Valve's Steam platform as this gaming platform has 125 million active users, and many of them are active in playing in such popular games like DOTA 2.

According to the source, in order to gain more users and start to attract active players, Facebook should convince its developers that Gameroom will "share its social network's massive reach." With that, it can lead gamers to try a new platform.

Meanwhile, Valve's Steam has been reportedly banning misleading store page screenshots, according to Kotaku. Steam is now requiring game developers to advertise their games with real screenshots, instead of an art, CGI or pictures. However, there are two keypoints: First, developers who post mature content will be flagged, and second, the images in the top carousel should be a actual screenshots.

Valve released a statement about the latest update. According to the tech company, they require screenshots instead of an image of a store page is because it is hard for many customers to understand what the product they are looking at. Aside from that, they are starting to show "game screenshots in more places."
