Supermoon News & Update: Biggest & Brightest In Almost 70 Years Is Visible Anywhere In The World; What NASA Has To Say!

On November 14 Monday night, the skies will shine with the brightest and biggest supermoon in almost 70 years. This will be the closest to the earth since 1948 and we will not get the chance to experience another supermoon until November 2034.

Yahoo News explains the supermoon phenomenon that will happen on November 14. Since the moon's orbit is elliptical, there are times that the moon is closer or farther from the earth.

It is during when the moon is closest to earth that we get to experience a supermoon. During supermoon, the moon appears 14 percent closer, thus looks much larger in diameter and is 30 percent brighter than the usual full moon.

The good news for this supermoon phenomenon happening on November 14 is it will be visible anywhere in the world provided the weather permits. However, it would be best if one can go in an elevated place and have a good view of the east according to Rob Sharpe who is a WeatherZone meteorologist. He added that the supermoon will still be impressive on Tuesday for those who might miss to catch the moon on Monday.

Accordning to NASA, the best time to see the supermoon is before sunrise of Monday when the moon is at its closest to the earth. Noah Petro, who is NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Mission's deputy project scientist, said that people can catch the supermoon on either Sunday or Monday night. The difference between the two days will be subtle and people should not be readily able to distinguish the difference.

However, Neil deGrasse Tyson, who is the director of Hayden's Planetarium in Ney York, is not amenable calling the phenomenon on November 14 as supermoon. He asked that would you call a 16 inch pizza a super pizza if you are used to having a 15 inch pizza.
