Marvel Studios' latest superhero effort, the Scott Derrickson-directed movie "Doctor Strange", continues the blockbuster streak made by titles off of Marvel's expansive cinematic universe or MCU. The studio announced the news yesterday was set to take the #1 spot at the US box office, reeling in a total of approximately $153 million domestically. This is the second time in the row that the movie swept movie earnings and came out on top.
This second week earning almost recoups the movie's entire budget, which costs approximately $165 million. This accumulated in just the second week of the movie's run in domestic theaters and makes a whopping gross of $365 million, adding to the movie's already impressive $240 international gross, since the first week of its release.
International grosses from the current week add at least another $100 million, topping the supernatural epic's global earnings at $493 million. That makes "Doctor Strange" one of the highest-grossing MCU movies and is poised to surpass "Captain America: The First Avenger" and "Thor" in no time. Reaching beyond impressive numbers by previous MCU movies is certainly a possibility for "Doctor Strange", with $500+ million earnings of the "Ant-Man" and "Iron-Man" movies being the likeliest ones to beat.
"Doctor Strange" is directed and co-written by Scott Derrickson ("Sinister"). The movie follows a skilled neurosurgeon (played by Benedict Cumberbatch) who is lead to the world of mystical arts after an accident cost him his ability to do surgery. The movie also stars Tilda Swinton, Mads Mikkelsen, and Chiwetel Ejiofor. Check out the trailer:
